Bear Nibbles - Concept / Illustration Brief

I was given a brief to concept new potential themes for the cards found within the Bear Nibbles yoyo packs. Things I had to consider were that these cards would be fun for kids aged 4-9 and that kids would learn something important, whilst keeping them full of imagination and playfulness. I had to make sure these cards related to the Bear Nibbles brand which is really simple and easy to explain, they had to be bold and brave.

The Brief

We’d love to hear your thoughts on what our next set of yoyo cards should be. Specifically:

1/ The overall theme of the cards- there needs to be a story here with BEAR at the centre that is full of imagination and fun. It needs to not feel like a classroom lesson at all.

2/ The type of content/set out of the cards

3/ Any thoughts around what ‘collectable mechanic’ you’ve give to go with it.

Idea 1 : Hall Fame the story

Bear has travelled all over the world and through time and he has met some very strange and very interesting creatures. When bear travels he makes sure he brings his camera - so he can take portraits of these creatures and hang them in his gallery. When Bear is not traveling he likes to relax by walking through his ‘Hall of Fame’ and admiring the creatures he has met and learn all about what makes them so great!

BUT…

Bears most recent pictures haven't come back from the printers!! on further investigation Bear has found out that his printer Kevin the Koala was asleep on the job…again… and sent Bears pictures to the packets instead of the printers.

Can you help Bear track down his missing portraits and hang them back up in his gallery?

Hall of Fame cards & the collectable mechanic

Bears missing portraits are of people famous for making a difference in the world in many different fields of work throughout history. These will be people from all walks of life (not just the ones you learn in school…) These people have been redrawn into fun and colourful, creature caricatures with indicators in the top corner as to what achievements they are renown for, the back also holds more key facts about them.

E.g
Steve Paws = Steve Jobs the inventor
J.K. Hooting = J.K. Rowling the acclaimed author
Usain Spot = Usain Bolt the worlds fastest man

As well as more facts, the back of the cards hold a special secret.. At the bottom of each card there is a code which you enter online. This code takes you to Bears actual gallery, here you can walk the corridors, see how many portraits you need to collect and answer a few questions relating to the portrait you have found (clues in the facts on the back of the card) to find exactly where the portrait needs to be hung. You get points for finding the portraits and even more points for the rare ones - the points can be redeemed for a free packs of yo-yos!

Idea 2 : Kitchen Pals the story

Bear is such a busy bee that when it comes to dinner he goes for the easiest option - the problem is that easy isn't always the best…or healthiest. Bear wants to learn how to cook properly but he doesn't know where to start!? Bear has contacted his ‘Kitchen Pals’ from all over the world to see if they can help him understand cooking and teach him about the different food they eat in their countries. Collect all of Bears Kitchen Pals and see if they can help you as well!

Each card is from a different country (colour coded from the countries flag) with a creature chef native to the country on the front showing the finished meal. On the back is a simplified ingredients / method list to help children and parents bond over cooking and get children more interested in making meals from scratch.

To keep all of Bears recipes safe he has a special recipe book - Apply for your very own one by sending in the barcodes from your yo-yo packs! The book contain special cards which your cards fit into perfectly. These cards hold more information about the country that your meal came from. Collect all the recipes and become a master chef!

Idea 3 : Stolen Habitats the story

Bear thought things were a little quite until he started receiving lots of letters from creatures all over the world. Telling him that Scammie the Chameleon had tricked them out of the things unique to them and their habitats. He then stole parts of their habitats because, as he said, “ You don't need it anymore!” At first the Animals loved the change as it allowed them to try different things but now they’re finding it difficult because now they’re not adapted for their habitats… Travel with Bear to these different habitats, find the animals which have been effected and learn about them and their habitat and find out why they didn't need to change!

The question is… What is Scammie up to? Bear has found out that Scammie is cloning the parts of the creatures he tricks to create a new breed of animal that can adapt to any habitat… but he need to take parts of the habitats to test them! Keep track of the part of the creatures Scammie takes and see if you can help Bear imagine what his creation looks like…?

Stolen Habitats cards & the collectable mechanic

Each habitat comes in three parts: Foreground, middle ground and background, these can be stuck together to create a 3D habitat. There are also stickers of the missing parts of the habitats which Bear has managed to take back from Scammie. These are for the children to stick in place - missing sections of the cards will have information / clues about which sticker it needs and why it’s important in the creatures habitat. The creature will be in the background card looking exceptionally out of place and boy oh boy don't just they know it!

As well as collecting all of the 3D habitats, why not apply for a personalised Track pack for your chance to restore the animals back to their original states. You can keep track of the animals and habitats you have found, Read Scammies criminal file to find out more about the mastermind and enter the drawing competition to see if you can identify what Scammies new animal looks like… and see if your animal gets picked!
